1912 Olympic Games: Results for All Competitors in All Events, with Commentary

1912 Olympic Games: Results for All Competitors in All Events, with Commentary

$95

The 1912 Olympic Games held in Stockholm, Sweden, were the most “modern” Olympic Games yet celebrated and the most successful of the Modern Era to that date. Much of the success is credited to the influence of Viktor Balck, who is remembered as “The Father of Swedish Sports.” The 1912 Olympics also featured new innovations and events. A semiautomatic electrical timing device and a photo-finish camera were used, and the decathlon and modern pentathalon were new events. This work, the sixth in a series on the early Olympics, provides unusually extensive information on the sites, dates, competitors, and nations of the Stockholm games. Results for each event, including cycling, diving, fencing, rowing and sculling, shooting, tennis, water polo, and yachting, among others, are provided.Author Biography: Bill Mallon is a cofounder and vice president of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) and the original editor of the Journal of Olympic History. He is an orthopaedic surgeon in Durham, North Carolina. Ture Widlund, a resident of Stockhom, is also the coauthor of The 1896 Olympic Games.

Again to Carthage

$0.99

Again to Carthage is the “breathtaking, pulse-quickening, stunning” sequel to Once a Runner that “will have you standing up and cheering, and pulling on your running shoes” (Chicago Sun-Times). Originally self-published in 1978, Once a Runner became a cult classic, emerging after three decades to become a New York Times bestseller. Now, in Again to Carthage, hero Quenton Cassidy returns. The former Olympian has become a successful attorney in south Florida, where his life centers on work, friends, skin diving, and boating trips to the Bahamas. But when he loses his best friend to the Vietnam War and two relatives to life’s vicissitudes, Cassidy realizes that an important part of his life was left unfinished. After reconnecting with his friend and former coach Bruce Denton, Cassidy returns to the world of competitive running in a desperate, all-out attempt to make one last Olympic team. Perfectly capturing the intensity, relentlessness, and occasional lunacy of a serious runner’s life, Again to Carthage is a must-read for runners—and athletes—of all ages, and a novel that will thrill any lover of fiction.

 Age is Just a Number

Age is Just a Number

$5.09

From legendary Olympic gold medalist Dara Torres comes a motivational, inspirational memoir about staying fit, aging gracefully, and pursuing your dreams. Dara Torres captured the hearts and minds of Americans of all ages when she launched her Olympic comeback as a new mother at the age of forty-one years after she had retired from competitive swimming and eight years since her last Olympics. When she took three silver medals in Beijing including a heartbreaking .01-second finish behind the gold medalist in the women s 50-meter freestyle America loved her all the more for her astonishing achievement and her good-natured acceptance of the results. Now, in Age Is Just a Number, Dara reveals how the dream of an Olympic comeback first came to her when she was months into her first, hard-won pregnancy. With humor and candor, Dara recounts how she returned to serious training while nursing her infant daughter and contending with her beloved father s long battle with cancer. Dara talks frankly about diving back in for this comeback; about being an older athlete in a younger athletes game; about competition, doubt, and belief; about working through pain and uncertainty; and finally about seizing the moment and, most important, never giving up. A truly self-made legend, her story will resonate with women of all ages and with anyone daring to entertain a seemingly impossible dream.
